Brew for the Tea Parties: ??Reagan?"s Unfinished Agenda?"

PrintPrintEmailEmailPDF PDF

teaparty2Over at NRO I have an article suggesting that the Tea Party movement adopt as its program what I am calling “Reagan’s Unfinished Agenda.”? In one sentence, it describes a way of going on offense, and getting out of the defensive crouch that is the dominant posture of conservatives at the moment.

… starting in 1987, Reagan offered a more comprehensive package he called the ?SEconomic Bill of Rights.? In addition to the balanced-budget and line-item veto amendments, Reagan proposed three additional amendments that would impose a federal spending limit, require a two-thirds vote of the House and Senate for any tax increases, and prohibit wage and price controls.

Poetry Contest Inspires Palestinian Youth

PrintPrintEmailEmailPDF PDF

About the Author: Christina Higgins serves as Assistant Information Officer at the U.S. Consulate-General in Jerusalem.

It’s sounds corny, but it’s true. Every time I have the honor of representing the United States at a local event, I choke up. It’s not hard to represent the United States, because we stand for enduring values. President Obama spoke about these values in a powerful speech on May 21, calling them, “a light that shines for all who seek freedom, fairness, equality, and dignity….” But I also choke up, because I feel an immense honor representing my aunts and uncles in Wisconsin and Ohio, my cousins in Florida, Texas, and Oregon, my friends throughout the United States.

It happened most recently in Bethlehem. I had the honor of attending graduation at a Palestinian high school. I presented an award for the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem’s online poetry contest. The contest winners hailed from Jerusalem, Hebron, Bethlehem and Gaza. As I entered the assembly hall, just behind the Boy Scouts clad in Scottish kilts, I was reminded of the fascinating and rich history of the Holy Land, where young Palestinians play traditional Arabic tunes on bagpipes. I presented the award to the winner, the beaming graduate, Khalid, and congratulated him on his poem, “Let’s rejoice. It’s Springtime!” Reflecting the contest’s theme of nature and conservation, he wrote, “I see the flowers, the roses, everywhere, like the stars in the sky…I hear the sound of rivers and waterfalls, like a melody and a song.”

Khalid displayed all the exuberance of a high school graduate anywhere in the world. He was looking toward the future with anticipation. In fact, many in the region are filled with anticipation, encouraged by U.S. statements of support for the two-state solution, a future where Israel and a Palestinian state will live together in peace and security. All eyes are now on Egypt where President Obama will deliver an important speech on June 4 about America's relations with the Muslim world. I am sure that Khalid will be listening.

State-Controlled Media Shun Mark Levin's Best Selling Book

WILDFIRE

Shunned By Media, Levin Book Set To Sell One Million Copies

While the state-controlled media continues to shun him, syndicated radio talk host Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto is on track to sell a stunning one million copies, if it hasn't already done so. More than that number have already been printed by Simon and Schuster, its publisher.

And late today, it was revealed that the book will appear as number one on the New York Times Bestseller List for the ninth time in the past ten weeks. At Amazon, it remained in first place in books for over a month and has since generally found a home in the top ten or close to it (it ranks 12 at the moment).

But while conservative outlets have reviewed and discussed the book widely, the state-controlled mainstream media has almost completely ignored Liberty and Tyranny. Despite topping their sales list, you won't even find a review of the book in the New York Times. Don't bother checking other daily newspapers, either, as they've also found it unworthy of discussion.

To get a sense of what it all means, particularly since this is the most successful conservative book release in many years, your Radio Equalizer checked in with Levin himself. From the interview:

RADIO EQUALIZER: Mark, despite its success, I've not been able to find any real mainstream media coverage of your book. Why do you think that is the case?

MARK LEVIN: The mainstream media want to anoint our representatives and spokesmen. They have no connection with the conservative grassroots. They have disdain for them. They're not confident debating a thinking, principled conservative who promotes a viewpoint and way of life that differs from their own. Most of the mainstream media have become propagandists for the statist agenda.

TRE: Why do you believe the book has done so well despite the lack of press attention? What does it say about the future of the conservative movement?

LEVIN: First, I do want to thank my brothers and sisters in talk radio who asked me to appear on their programs to discuss Liberty and Tyranny. Also, Rush and Sean have been behind the book from the start. And Fox & Friends and Neil Cavuto helped launched the book as well. In particular, my wonderful audience has been receptive to the book, the contents of which we discuss at length during the program.

The book touches a nerve because it explains why we must be informed about our principles and confident in advancing them, especially during dire times such as these. The book resonates not only with conservatives but others because it goes back to first principles, from the great classical philosophers and the founding fathers to more recent thinkers and statesmen.

It takes on the big issues and deconstructs them from a conservative perspective. The book also examines the thinking and motivations of the statist, who doesn't share our reverence for the fundamental greatest of our society. It's a serious book about serious times.

TRE: Do you believe its strong sales will lead to a flood of new books with political themes, especially from conservatives?

LEVIN: It's already apparent that some publishing houses are trying to imitate the success of Liberty and Tyranny. What's that old line -- imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? Let me put it this way: I am becoming increasingly flattered.

The story not being told in the mainstream media is that this book is the most popular and successful non-fiction book in the country, and has been for over two months; and it has succeeded without a single major media story or ad buy. This is a harbinger of a grassroots sentiment.

Levin is correct: a flood of copycats is expected to hit later this year, with shifty-eyed, credibility-challenged MSNBC Morning Host / Resident Squish Joe Scarborough kicking things off next week.

As the state-controlled media truly does enjoy selecting its own "conservative" leaders, one might expect Scarborough's book to generate the publicity that has eluded Levin.

For conservatives, the lesson here is that they don't need the mainstream media to promote their work. Word of mouth, in addition to talk radio and the blogosphere can ignite the sales of a high-quality book to levels that have their state-controlled foes green with envy.

Bin Laden in hiding, Obama in public

PrintPrintEmailEmailPDF PDF

by Mark Silva

On the eve of President Barack Obama's address to the Muslim world from Cairo, where he will deliver an appeal for mutual understanding, the Arab world has heard from another voice: A recorded audio-tape attributed to Osama bin Laden, fugitive leader of al Qaeda, accusing Obama of fomenting "hatred'' with military action in Pakistan.

The purported broadcast of bin Laden's words, aired by the Arab-language Al Jazeera satellite television station as Obama was arriving in Saudi Arabia today, stood as a stark reminder of the hurdles that the United States still faces throughout the region.

While the president is intent on "resetting''' U.S. relations with the Muslim world in his planned televised address from the campus of Cairo University in Egypt, some of the long-elusive sponsors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist assaults against the United States remain at large and refocused on overturning the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"I don't think it's surprising that al Qaeda would want to shift attention away from the president's historic efforts ... to reach out and have an open dialogue with the Muslim world,'' Robert Gibbs, Obama's press secretary, said as the president was holding private meetings with the king of Saudi Arabia.

Bin Laden, son of a Saudi family that gained enormous wealth in construction and built the royal palaces of the late King Saud, became involved in the militant Jihadist movement in Afghanistan after the Soviet Union invaded that nation. After returning to Saudi Arabia, he was confined to house arrest, and left the country in the early 1990s - his Saudi citizenship publicly revoked in 1994.

If Obama's mission in the Middle East has a clear purpose, the administration maintains, so does the timing of al Qaeda's message.

The tape's broadcast follows comments from al-Qaeda's second- in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, urging Egyptians to shun Obama and contending that the "torturers of Egypt" and "slaves of America'' had invited the American leader to speak in Cairo.

The administration has attempted to draw a contrast between an al Qaeda in hiding and an American leader taking a high-profile stance with his appeal to the Muslim world.

"You have, you know, the leader of the free world speaking from one of the great cities in the world, and you have, you know, bin Laden speaking from an undisclosed... location,'' said Philip J. Crowley, assistant secretary of state for public affairs. "That speaks volumes in terms of the contrast.''
